Policy Statement

ÌÇÐÄvlog¾«Æ· (Conestoga) is committed to advancing the health and societal well-being of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors. As part of this commitment, ÌÇÐÄvlog¾«Æ· does not permit Smoking, Electronic Smoking, or the use of other Tobacco Products in any Conestoga owned building, leased building, or College owned vehicle. Outdoor Smoking, Electronic Smoking and the use of Tobacco Products are also restricted within certain areas on College Property following the Smoke-free Ontario Act.

Scope

This policy applies to all Conestoga employees, staff, students, volunteers, contractors, consultants, and campus visitors (hereafter "individuals"). This policy applies to smoking, electronic smoking, or the use of any other tobacco products on Conestoga property or in Conestoga owned vehicles.

Definitions

ÌÇÐÄvlog¾«Æ· maintains a glossary of terms specific to the institution. The ones in use for this document are defined below.


College Property
Any land boundary owned and controlled, or leased, by ÌÇÐÄvlog¾«Æ· inclusive of buildings, learning places, public places, workplaces, and College owned vehicles.

Electronic Smoking Device
Any product containing or delivering nicotine or other substances that can be used by a person for the purpose of inhaling vapor or aerosol. The term includes but is not limited to any such device sold as an e-cigarette, e-cigar, e-pipe, e-hookah, or vape pen.

Smoking/Smoke
Inhaling, exhaling, burning, or carrying any lit or heated cigar, cigarette, pipe, or any other lit or heated tobacco or plant product intended for inhalation, including hookahs (waterpipe) and cannabis, whether natural or synthetic, in any manner or in any form. Smoking also includes the use of an electronic smoking device.

Tobacco Product(s)
Any substance containing tobacco leaf, including but not limited to cigarettes, cigars, pipes, hookah, shisha, snuff, chew, dip, bidis, blunts, clove cigarettes, or any other preparation of tobacco.

Policy

  1. It is not permitted to Smoke, use an Electronic Smoking Device, or use any other Tobacco Products:
    1. Inside any Conestoga owned or leased building.
    2. Inside any Conestoga owned or leased vehicle.
    3. Within a 9-meter radius from any ÌÇÐÄvlog¾«Æ· building entrance, exit or other doorways.
    4. Within 20 meters of any Conestoga owned children's playground, sports field, Conestoga Student Inc. (CSI) patio and/or spaces where food is offered.
    5. In any other areas where signage has been posted indicating that smoking is not permitted.
  2. Requests to use Tobacco Products for traditional or spiritual ceremonies in an approved location can be made through Facilities Operations.
  3. Signage meeting the Smoke-free Ontario Regulations is to be placed at each entrance and exit of all College Properties.
  4. Additional signage that meets the Smoke Free Ontario Regulations is to be placed at each main entrance of all Conestoga properties indicating the minimum distance smoking and electronic smoking devices can be used from the building.
  5. Individuals Smoking or using Tobacco Products in permitted areas on College Property are expected to avoid littering, to respect municipal by-laws and provincial legislation. They also shall be considerate of neighbouring residents, businesses, and institutions.
  6. Smoking waste receptacles are to be placed:
    1. At least 9 meters away from the entrances and exits of Conestoga property.
    2. At least 20 meters from children's playground, sports fields, patios, or places where food is offered.
  7. The use of nicotine replacement therapy products (e.g., patches, mints, gum etc.) for use in treating nicotine or tobacco dependence are permitted by this policy.
