Program description - January 2026

Our two-year General Arts and Science: English Language Studies (ELS) certificate program focuses on academic English language skills that will prepare you with the language requirements necessary to pursue other post-secondary programs in Ontario.

You will take courses that will develop your reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, with an emphasis on pronunciation. You will also be required to take credit-based courses that will develop your knowledge about Canada and prepare you for success in higher education. We accept students for the fall, winter and spring/summer terms.

Program highlights

  • The ELS program has four levels, each taking one full term (15 weeks) to complete.
  • New students are placed in one of the four levels based on the results of our online Conestoga English Language Assessment and Placement (CELAP) test.
  • Delivery options

  • Hybrid: Two days online (synchronous) and three days on campus.
  • Online: All classes are online (synchronous).

Note:

  • Domestic applicants eligible for this program include:
    • Canadian citizens
    • Permanent residents
    • Refugees or convention refugees
  • International students: To accomodate visa concerns or other delays, we also offer mid-term entry into our program in March, July, and November.
    • These accelerated, seven-week delivery options require a higher language placement test score.
